GAZ-SYSTEM HAS SIGNED A SET OF CONTRACTS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF POGÓRSKA WOLA-TWORZEŃ GAS PIPELINE

In July 2019, GAZ-SYSTEM concluded construction work contracts for three sections of the Pogórska Wola-Tworzeń gas pipeline. The entire investment project is one of the longest elements of the 168-km-long north-south gas corridor. Sections I and II were made available to contractors as early as July 11, 2019.

The construction of the gas pipeline is a key project related to the development of the Polish gas transmission system. Its primary objective is to strengthen the energy security of the country and ensure the possibility of diversification of gas supply sources to Poland. “Our investment project is an opportunity for the economic development of southern Poland in many areas. The new gas pipeline will primarily increase the capacity of the transmission system, which in the future, due to the growing interest of companies in using gas as an energy carrier, will enable their connection to the gas network,” stresses Artur Zawartko, Vice-President of GAZ-SYSTEM.

The Vice-President of GAZ-SYSTEM also points out that this is the first gas pipeline for which anticipatory measures were taken to ensure optimal implementation of the investment project. "Before the contractor was commissioned to perform the construction works, a number of preparatory works were carried out, i.e. unexploded ordnance survey and archaeological reconnaissance, with the aim of accelerating and improving the contractor's entry into the field,” emphasizes Zawartko.

He also notes that a large number of trenchless crossings has been designed along the route, including 3 Direct Pipe- type crossings, 1 HDD under the Vistula River, approx. 1 km long, and 137 other crossings, including drilling, jacking, and microtunnelling. The gas pipeline will also be connected to the system station which is to connect the new transmission system with the existing one and ultimately ensure, among other things, increased gas supplies to the Podbeskidzie region.

“The GAZ-SYSTEM investment project is important for the economic development of south-eastern Poland. After its completion, GAZ-SYSTEM will pay annual property taxes of up to 2% of the value of the constructed transmission infrastructure. This amount will contribute to the budget of the municipalities along the gas pipeline route and can be used for the needs of the local community,” states Vice-President Zawartko.

The Pogórska Wola-Tworzeń gas pipeline route has been divided into three sections:

  • Section I, Pogórska Wola-Pałecznica, approx. 78 km long: municipalities of Skrzyszów, Tarnów, Lisia Góra, Dąbrowa Tarnowska, Żabno, Olesno, Gręboszów, Opatowiec, Bejsce, Kazimierza Wielka and Skalbmierz.
  • Section II, Pałecznica-Braciejówka, approx. 56 km long: municipalities of Pałecznica, Radziemice, Słomniki, Iwanowice, Gołcza, Trzyciąż and Olkusz.
  • Section III, Braciejówka-Tworzeń, approx. 34 km long: municipalities of Olkusz, Klucze, Bolesław, Sławków and Dąbrowa Górnicza.

Stalprofil S.A. will be the contractor for the construction works under Sections I and II, while Section III construction works have been entrusted to IDS-BUD S.A.

The pipeline is scheduled for completion by the end of 2021.

The Pogórska Wola-Tworzeń gas pipeline route will run through three provinces: Małopolskie, Świętokrzyskie and Śląskie. The gas pipeline will be approx. 168 km long, with a nominal diameter of 1000 mm and working pressure of 8.4 MPa.

In October 2013, the European Commission granted the investment project the status of "Project of Common Interest" (PCI) and included it in two consecutive lists published in 2015 and 2017.

The construction of the Pogórska Wola-Tworzeń high-pressure gas pipeline is co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund under the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020.

GAZ-SYSTEM plays a strategic role in the Polish economy. We are responsible for natural gas transmission and operate the most important gas pipelines in Poland. As part of the 2015-2025 investment programme, GAZ-SYSTEM plans to build over 2000 km of new gas pipelines in western, southern and eastern parts of Poland. Further development of the national transmission network, including the construction of new gas pipelines making part of the North-South Gas Corridor, as well as the construction of interconnections with the neighbouring countries, will strengthen Poland’s energy security and make an important contribution to the development of the European transmission system.

The Company is implementing one of the most important infrastructural projects in Poland – the Baltic Pipe project, which consists in the construction of a bidirectional offshore gas pipeline connecting Poland and Denmark and the expansion of the local transmission network.

GAZ-SYSTEM also owns Polskie LNG, the operator of the President Lech Kaczyński's LNG Terminal in Świnoujście.
