Natural Energy Fund: last days for submitting applications

These are the last days for submitting documents to the "Natural Energy Fund" grant competition that has been organized for nine years by GAZ-SYSTEM. Please remember that the competition is open to schools, kindergartens, foundations, associations, municipalities and towns. Funding applications for ideas intended to save the natural environment can still be submitted until December 17, 2018.

When investing in the construction of new gas pipelines and system connections, the company follows its commitment to the environment in which it operates. Each year, the "Natural Energy Fund" competition is announced in five selected voivodeships of Poland, where GAZ-SYSTEM is expanding its national gas transmission network. In this year's edition these are the Mazowieckie, Podkarpackie, Podlaskie, Śląskie and Zachodniopomorskie voivodeships. The community partner for the 9th edition of the competition is the "Za górami, za lasami" Foundation.

The purpose of the competition is to activate local communities to take specific actions for the benefit of the environment. Funding provided by GAZ-SYSTEM allowed 140 of the best environmental projects submitted in the competition to be completed. One grant can reach up to PLN 10,000 and every year the competition jury can award 25 such grants.

Municipalities are eager to enter the competition. In the Podkarpackie voivodship, the Skołyszyn municipality implemented the "THINK ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT. SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS!", which reached more than 12 thousand people living in 3.6 thousand households. In response to an actual, local need, the municipality, working together with the waste management company, carried out a study that revealed that most of the waste generated by residents are plastic bags. Because such bags are light and the residents are careless, such waste often finds it way beyond the trash can canopy and pollutes the environment. An informational and educational campaign was launched and activities were carried out to increase environmental awareness of the local community. A competition was held for families with children aged up to 13, where the purpose was to develop a comic book about plastic bags and their negative impact on the environment. A total of 3.6 thousand environmentally friendly shopping bags were also made and distributed to all households in the municipality. A survey among 150 respondents showed that under the influence of information received from the radio, TV and the press, as many as 69% of them reduced the number of plastic bags used by households or prompted them not to use such bags anymore.

The PUK PUK Foundation from the Śląskie Voivodeship completed a project called "WINGED FRIENDS" as part of the competition. The project's main purpose was to provide children with basic information about the local ecosystem, objects and natural phenomena in their immediate surroundings. As part of the project activities were carried out in the area of the Upper Vistula Valley, with particular attention paid to the importance of the Zapadź peatbog - one of the few peatbogs preserved in the Śląskie Voivodeship, which is the home to rare and protected plants, and the abundance of species is significantly larger than in other areas. Workshops with an ornithologist and nature expeditions were carried out among others as part of the project. Students watched the movie "Macrocosmos. Heavenly dance" and the knowledge they acquired allowed them to get involved in preparing an educational board about the role of peatbogs, which was then erected in the Zapadź peatbog . All activities are summarized in the publication "Winged Friends", which can be downloaded from the website at  https://issuu.com/fundacjapukpuk/docs/publikacja-skrzydlaci-150.

The Natural Energy Fund allows wildlife and weather laboratories to be created every year; it also facilitates do-it-yourself upcycling and the creation of sensory paths. While pursuing their projects, participants observe the life of bats, storks and butterflies. This leads to unique collections of knowledge, which the competition winners share with others on websites and social networking sites.

As part of the 2015-2025 investment programme, GAZ-SYSTEM is constructing over 2000 km of new gas pipelines in the western, southern and eastern parts of Poland. Over a dozen new gas pipelines are under construction within the North-South Gas Corridor and the compressor station in Kędzierzyn Koźle, as well as interconnections with Lithuania and Slovakia. Onshore gas pipelines are planned to connect the planned FSRU floating terminal in the Gulf of Gdansk with the national transmission system. The LNG Terminal in Świnoujście is also being extended, as a result of which the regasification capacity of this facility will be increased by more than a half.

The company is also implementing one of the most important infrastructural projects in the country - the Baltic Pipe project which consists in the construction of a two-way offshore gas pipeline connecting Poland and Denmark, expansion of the local transmission network and three gas compressor stations.
