GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. Strategy towards 2025

The reviewed Strategy of GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. creates new business development opportunities for the gas market. Increasing competitiveness through projects aimed at enhancing the technical capacities of gas transmission, ensuring security of the transmission system operations and strengthening GAZ-SYSTEM S.A.’s position on the European energy market by building a physical gas hub in Poland on the basis of existing transmission infrastructure, and growing the transmission volume in the Polish system are the key pillars of the new Strategy.

The Supervisory Board approved the Strategy of Gas Transmission Operator GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. towards 2025. Over the next decade, the company plans to focus on projects aimed at increasing the capacity of the Polish natural gas transmission network and creating the technical capacities for transporting gas from various sources and directions.

As a result of the Strategy, another set of modern transmission pipelines stretching over 2000 kilometers will be built in Poland by 2025, and the efficient use of the LNG Terminal at the Polish seaside will ensure access to global gas markets. New cross-border connections will be formed. GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. will create a Polish physical gas hub serving as the regional gas trading center, which will enable Poland to derive commercial benefits from its location in Central Europe.

The reviewed Strategy is a response to the changing gas market environment and consumer expectations, for whom access to the global LNG market and ability to buy gas from different suppliers creates an additional competitive advantage and creates opportunities for purchasing gas on attractive terms.

The current situation on the Polish gas market is quite specific. New transmission infrastructure projects combined with the LNG Terminal in Świnoujście will completely transform the existing imports model. Implementation of GAZ-SYSTEM S.A.’s Strategy plays a crucial role in this process. Our priorities are not limited to ensuring energy security and coping with emergencies. We are designing new technical capacities of the transmission system and creating a gas market with free selection of Poland’s gas suppliers and complete independence of any supply direction. It is GAZ-SYSTEM S.A.’s ambition to become a strong, competitive transmission operator in Central and Eastern Europe which has connections with various natural gas production sources and neighbouring systems where the potential gas buyers operate. Liberalization based on flexibility in selecting different sources and directions of gas supplies will ensure competitive business conditions to both our existing and future customers, said Tomasz Stępień, President of the Management Board of GAZ-SYSTEM S.A.

The Company defines the next challenges and the three strategic development directions of GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. towards 2025:

1. building a strong position of the company through active engagement in the integration of the European gas market,
2. ensuring the security of the transmission system operations and the continuity of transmission service provision,
3. increasing the operational and organizational efficiency of the company.

The process of integrating the national transmission system with European networks will be based on the construction of infrastructure enabling increased natural gas transmission to producers, and creating the biggest chances for accepting gas deliveries from new directions. To build a competitive market, the company must also ensure cross-border connections and expand the national transmission infrastructure required for optimum interconnector operation. A new aspect of the reviewed strategy concerns the plans of creating a gas hub based on the infrastructure managed by GAZ-SYSTEM S.A., and promoting it in Poland and in the CEE region. In this context, the company also plans to build its own warehouse and offer storage services.

The strategic measures contributing to security of the transmission system operations listed in the Strategy include the continuation and improvement of the operating activities performed by the operator’s own staff to leverage the potential of its own employees.

The third strategic direction concentrates on enhancing the company’s organizational efficiency and is based on optimizing its costs and financing structure, as well as ensuring successful implementation of the other strategic directions (such as by adjusting the IT systems or pursuing a proactive HR policy).

Capital expenditure of GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. related to transmission system development will remain flat compared to recent years. The Strategy also assumes that EU funds acquired under such schemes as The Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme 2014–2020 or the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) will continue to play a major role in financing the key projects.

Projects implemented as part of GAZ-SYSTEM S.A.’s new Strategy will significantly strengthen its competitive position on the gas market, ensuring real diversification of deliveries and creating new development opportunities for GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. and the Polish economy, enabling gas deliveries with the use of a modern, expanded infrastructure, fully integrated with the European network.

GAZ-SYSTEM plays a strategic role in the Polish economy. We are responsible for natural gas transmission and operate the most important gas pipelines in Poland. As part of the 2015-2025 investment programme, GAZ-SYSTEM plans to build over 2000 km of new gas pipelines in western, southern and eastern parts of Poland. Further development of the national transmission network, including the construction of new gas pipelines making part of the North-South Gas Corridor, as well as the construction of interconnections with the neighbouring countries, will strengthen Poland’s energy security and make an important contribution to the development of the European transmission system.

The Company is implementing one of the most important infrastructural projects in Poland – the Baltic Pipe project, which consists in the construction of a bidirectional offshore gas pipeline connecting Poland and Denmark and the expansion of the local transmission network.

GAZ-SYSTEM also owns Polskie LNG, the operator of the President Lech Kaczyński's LNG Terminal in Świnoujście.
