Czeszów-Wierzchowice gas pipeline

Description of the investment

The goal of the project is the construction of the Czeszów-Wierzchowice gas pipeline with a length of ca. 14 km and a diameter of 1000 mm. On August 2015, a building permit was obtained for the pipeline, and the project completion is planned for the second quarter of 2017.

The gas pipeline, after the completion of the entire planned scope of development of the gas transmission system, will enable bi-directional gas supply, referred to as reverse flow.

Benefits

  • the new connection will enable the future management of surplus gas from Germany to the Górny Śląsk area which is connected with diversification of gas supplies,
  • will ensure the connection of the Wierzchowice Underground Gas Storage with the Górny and Dolny Śląsk agglomeration,
  • the future increase of energy security,
  • improvement of reliability and flexibility of operations of the entire system in the Dolny Śląsk and Opole regions.

Construction of the connection is significant also in the context of connecting new sources of supplies in northwestern Poland with the possibility of reversing the gas stream in the system, depending on the demand.
The gas pipeline will enable solid fuels to be replaced by gas, particularly in cogenerational systems, in the production of heat and energy. This will enable reduction of gas emissions and dust into the atmosphere.

Estimated costs of the investment: 86 MM PLN

Project of Common Interest

In October 2013, the European Commission granted the status of the Project of Common Interest to the project. More information about the meaning of PCI status for the development of the gas transmission infrastructure is presented here and in the brochure on PCI projects. Subject to meeting additional requirments, the project might also be eligible for the EU funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), which will apply under the European Union financial perspective 2014-2020.

Environmental consultations

The Regional Director for Environmental Protection in Wrocław announced that the decision on environmental conditions for the project named “Construction of a high pressure DN1000 MOP 8.4 MPa gas pipeline on the sections from ZZU Czeszów to ZZU Wierzchowice and from ZZU Czeszów to the Kiełczów node within the framework of gas pipeline construction: the border of the Republic of Poland (Lasów) – Taczalin – Radakowice – Gałów – Wierzchowice, together with the necessary supporting infrastructure in the Dolnośląskie Voivodship” will be issued by 31 October 2014.
