LNG Terminal

The liquefied natural gas off-take and re-gasification terminal is the largest and most important investment intended to improve the energy security of Poland. Acknowledged by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Poland as a strategic investment for the country, it will enable the offshore off-take of natural gas from any point in the world. This is the first project of this kind not only in Poland but also in Central and Western Europe as well as in the Baltic Sea region.

GAZ-SYSTEM S.A., by virtue of an act passed on 24 April 2009, fulfils the role of coordinator of works connected with the construction of the LNG terminal and outer port in Świnoujście. The Company's tasks are concentrated around preparing the schedule of preparatory works and performance of the project, monitoring the performance of the works according the accepted schedule, coordination of the flow of documents and information between entties, monitoring the performance of the investment in the scope of the terminal and preparation of reports, as well recommending tasks streamlining the entire process of performing the investment.

The role of GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. in the project according to the provisions of the Special Act of 24 April 2009.

The Polish transmission system operator is responsible not only for the coordination of the project and connection of the terminal to the national transmission network but also participates in the financing of the veture.  Moreover, GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. is responsible for the construction and operation of the connection gas pipeline at the terminal under construction as welll as the Świnoujście-Szczecin gas transmission pipeline.

GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. is the owner of the LNG S.A. Company which was appointed to construct and operate the liquefied natural gas terminal (LNG) in Świnoujście.

Basic facts about the LNG terminal

  • capacity: 5 bn m³

The LNG terminal is a facility for the off-take and re-gasification of liquefied natural gas  (LNG) supplied by sea to the port in Świnoujście.

The LNG technology applied throughout the world consists of transporting natural gas in liquefied form by special liquefied gas carriers to the terminals where the raw material is subjected to the re-gasification (heating the LNG to transform it back into gas). The raw material is transported in this form via the national gas pipeline network to any customer. During the first stage of the operations of the LNG terminal the off-take of 5 bn m3 of natural gas annually will be possible. In the next stage, depending on the demand for the raw material, it will be possible to increase the re-gasification capacity up to 7.5 bn m3, which constitutes approx. 50% of the current annual demand for gas in Poland (the present consumption of Poland is approx. 14 bn m3 of gas annually).

Elements of the project include:

  • new breakwater on the Baltic Sea
  • port infrastructure to service the LNG carriers
  • Szczecin-Świnoujście connection gas pipeline
  • LNG Terminal
